Magical Winter Break Camp

December 5, 2016 by Janet Callahan Leave a Comment

Brace yourself. Winter break is coming!

Magical Winter Break Camp 2016 with tent and people sitting around a campfire

And with it comes, “Mom, I’m booooored!” from the kid who just got new toys.

Every year, I think, “The kids have this whole week off school between Christmas and New Years. We should do something fun as a family! Maybe we should take a trip, or go to some museums, or build a snow fort!”

And then the holidays hit with all their busy-ness, and winter break rolls around, I realize that I have no plan, and we’re going to be home all week with nothing to do but get on each others’ last nerve.

Actually…that happens with every school break.

Not all summer, because the kids are at camp.

So, maybe we need a camp!

Do you want to do something fun this year for break with the kids?

Do you want to do something magical with the kids?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was some sort of camp they could go to and have fun all week?

This year, I’m hosting a free virtual camp during winter break. FIVE days with an assortment of camp-style activities for you and your children to do together. Activities will be suitable for any weather, and a wide range of ages.

Each morning you’ll get an email with a  list of magical activities in a variety of categories. Discussion and reporting out of the fun you’ve had will happen in the Magical Moms Club facebook group, but you need to be registered for camp to get the day’s activities and to receive your camp swag.

Complete at least one activity from each day by the end of the holidays (11:59 pm, January 1, 2017 eastern time) and your children each will receive a Magical Winter Break Camp 2016 button in the mail.

Registration for camp (FREE!) will be open until 6 pm (eastern time) December 24th, and camp starts with your first email early on the morning of December 26th. Click here to register!

Call For Submissions: A Pagan Child’s Book of Prayers

February 23, 2015 by Janet Callahan 5 Comments

I am seeking submissions for an anthology of prayers suitable for Pagan children (ages 0-12)  from many different traditions.

Categories for prayers will include the typical mornings, bedtimes, and mealtimes, but will also include things like gratitude, starting school, the death of a pet, safe travels, healing for a friend, and more – anything that a child might be interested in asking for the help of the Gods and Goddesses in their lives. Prayers may be to specific deities, or may be more general.

Prayers should be less than 100 words in length. Because this is specifically for children, rhyming prayers or prayers that maintain a rhythm are preferred. Multiple submissions from the same contributor are encouraged.

Submissions will be reviewed, and editing may be suggested before a submission is accepted.

Submissions, inquiries, and questions can be sent to jcallahan240@gmail.com

Accepted prayers will be paid at a rate of $0.03 per word of the finished and accepted piece upon printing, plus one copy per contributor. Contributors will be allowed to order copies at wholesale cost.

Illustrations also wanted. Please contact me for more information.

Deadline for initial submissions is August 1, 2015. Expected publication is November 2015, but this may change if there is not sufficient submissions.

Pagan Pride

August 6, 2014 by Janet Callahan Leave a Comment

It’s getting to be Pagan Pride Day season – ours is this coming weekend.

While I know Pagan Pride Day was started to be an open invitation for folks in the community to come out and see what we’re all about, I’m not sure that it actually does that. I haven’t seen much in the way of outside media attention about our local event in quite a while – or maybe we’re just not strange enough to be newsworthy anymore?

It’s a big year here in our community. There’s a group opening a temple. A group running a scholarship program & a food pantry. Lots of neat stuff going on, in an area that sometimes takes community as a dirty word.

I’ll be vending this year at Pagan Pride Detroit (August 9), and presenting in the family programming track about special needs parenting. I hope to see you there!

Fairy Wing Fridays

April 4, 2014 by Janet Callahan Leave a Comment

Girl in fairy wings blowing bubbles

So, I’m taking this class on marketing and branding (because I feel like it’s something that is not one of my strong points). The lovely Kris Oster of  Mythic Rhythm has been talking in her Return to Enchantment workshop about mythology and archetypes and that sort of thing, which is right up my alley.

A couple of weeks ago, one of our homework assignments was:

As the CEO of your Mythic Brand, write a memo to all of your employees asking them to make pleasure + play a number 1 priority + tell them WHY. Give them suggestions HOW to do it.

Now, I didn’t write a memo. But the why this business stuff ought to be focused on fun is that I’m working with kids and families. And magic. And things like summer camps and festivals. For Goodness’ sake, how can this not be fun?? More glitter. More glue. More mud. Forget casual Fridays, it’s now Fairy Wing Fridays!

And with that statement…an idea was born.

So, here it is, the first Fairy Wing Friday.

What is Fairy Wing Friday?

Fairy Wing Fridays are kind of  like Casual Fridays (which is funny, because my day-job employer recently decided that jeans were ok any day of the week….but our manager did ask the supervisors to keep their hideous Hawaiian shirts to Fridays only).  But Fairy Wing Fridays are more magical than ugly shirts. Fairy Wing Fridays starts with fairies.

So. On my facebook or Google+ pages, post a photo of you, your child, or someone you know wearing fairy wings, or artwork with fairies or other magical beings (please only post images you have the rights to, or provide credit to the person the image belongs to). Each week, there will be a question – feel free to answer it or not, even if you don’t post something fairy-like.

Back on the Vending Horse – Sort Of

October 21, 2013 by Janet Callahan 2 Comments

Over the weekend I had my first vending event in nearly 6 years – the Midwest Witches Bazaar, which is held before the Midwest Witches’ Ball.

My table at the Midwest Witches Bazaar

I’m always unsure what to expect at new venues – and this was no exception, even though I visited the Bazaar last year, its first in this location. Loading in through a side door with a step was something of a pain, and unloading in a cold steady rain was pretty unpleasant. Electricity was scarce, and since it’s held in a ballroom, the lighting leaves a lot to be desired – assuming I do this next year, I may want to do some experimenting with small battery powered LED lamps to light my table.  Forty Five vendors were scheduled to be there (4 didn’t show up). It was not a rousing success for me, but it seemed to me that shoppers were on a fairly tight budget, and it never seemed like there was an abundance of shoppers at any one time.

Still, it’s nice to get out once in a while and mingle. I got to meet two people I know online.  One is Elayne, who was there representing 4 Paws for Kender, one of the Ball’s charities this year – her son Kender is blind and has autism, which complicates getting a seeing eye dog, but 4 Paws for Ability will be training a dog for him next year (4 Paws for Ability asks each candidate to raise a little more than half of the money needed to train their dog). The other person I got to meet in person is Rowan Moss, author of the Pagan Children’s Learning Series. She’s written three books, with more planned. I picked up all three books and will be reviewing them in the future.

I’m not sure how much vending I’ll be doing in the future – it’s very difficult to line up childcare these days, and leaving my husband with the littles for a whole weekend isn’t really fair to anyone.
